Tips to Perfecting Your Holiday Turkey

Have you nailed down the perfect way to cook a turkey for the holidays? If not, you’ve come to the right place. Turkey is the traditional centrepiece of your holiday meal, so it’s important to cook it to perfection fuss-free.

We have turkey cooking tips to help pack all the flavour and juiciness you would expect from the perfect holiday turkey.

Avoid overcooking

Get the timing right to avoid dried out meat. The last thing you want this holiday season is to carve a turkey that isn’t packed with juices. Be sure to set your oven between 325°F to 350°F. Higher temperatures will cause the turkey to dry out, so it’s important to cook for a long time at a low temperature, while getting the turkey to a safe temperature.

Do not overestimate the cooking time of a turkey. Avoid this by using a thermometer and inserting it into the thickest part of the thigh when the meat is nearly done. When the thermometer reads 165, you’ll know when your turkey is cooked to perfection.

Work Ahead

It’s crucial to give yourself time to defrost the turkey before cooking. A minimum of two days is recommended. Make sure the turkey is kept at a safe temperature during the thawing process to prevent bacterial growth that may lead to foodborne illness. Depending on the size of the turkey, the time frame for thawing varies. Never thaw a turkey at room temperature on your kitchen counter or in hot water. Instead, put it in the fridge and let it thaw!

Season Generously

Season your turkey a day in advance to let the flavour sink in (make sure the turkey is defrosted). The last thing you want is a turkey that tastes bland. Salt is a great place to start, but there are many ways to season your turkey for optimal flavour. One way to spice up your seasoning is by adding some paprika, garlic powder and ground coriander to create a red rub seasoning. This is just one of many different ways to season your turkey!
