A Guide To Sustaining Healthy Habits

Many people make New Year’s resolutions to adopt healthy habits and lifestyles. The hardest part is making those habits stick long-term. There are many reasons why creating healthy habits may be challenging. For some, maybe you’re being too hard on yourself, or maybe you’re tackling too much at once. Here are four helpful tips to help make healthy habits stick.

SHIFT YOUR MINDSET AND CREATE LONG-TERM GOALS

Short-term, fast-acting solutions, like extreme calorie-restrictive diets, are not feasible solutions for fulfilling long-term goals. It is important to adopt behaviours that you’re more likely willing to stick with over time. If you love enjoying sweets, instead of cutting out sugar completely, try limiting to 1-2 treats per day and gradually per week. Or, try swapping for a healthier sweet treat. You’ll create healthier habits that you can stick to rather than experiencing quick results that aren’t sustainable.

SMALL STEPS LEAD TO BIG VICTORIES

Creating small, incremental changes are the best way to achieve long-term goals. Instead of trying to create fast-acting changes, start slow, and increase your efforts over time. That way, you’ll enjoy the benefit of fulfilling healthy activities without having to feel like the journey was a struggle.

BE ACCOUNTABLE TO YOURSELF

A role model can inspire you but they can’t create sustainable, healthy habits for you. Rather than relying on others to hold you accountable, set up a system and track your own progress. Remind yourself of what helped you succeed versus what caused you to get off track. Reward yourself when things go in the right direction but be sure to not beat yourself up when they don’t. As much as it is helpful to have people in your life to inspire and support you, it’s important to create the change for yourself with your own motivation.

FIND THE JOY IN THE JOURNEY

Don’t treat the journey to a healthy life as a chore. If you do, odds are you likely won’t stick with your new behaviours long-term. Design your life around the things you love to do - discover the activities you find uplifting and enjoyable! Once you find joy in healthy living, the lifestyle will eventually stick. The journey shouldn’t feel that it requires so much effort, so do what brings you joy.
